A work in progress: an online toolkit for the organization of sustainable festivals.
Initiated during the 13th Atelier for Young Festival Managers, Johannesburg, March 2018, The Festival Academy - together with participants, alumni and academic partner, the Witwatersrand University’s School of Arts - is creating a toolkit on the organisation of sustainable festivals, on all levels: political, economic, environmental, social, artistic, etc.
Following a (competitive) exercise during the Atelier Johannesburg, the 25 participants - all emerging festival directors, but working in a variety of contexts - developed ideas to create more sustainable festivals. Searching for answers on ‘how to meet the needs of the present, without compromising the needs of future generations’ - based on factors of external and internal impact and bearing in mind broadly different circumstances between the Global North and South - 5 blueprints for an online toolkit on sustainable festivals were presented.
The toolkit answering most closely the exercise’s criteria was selected by a jury of festival experts to be presented during the next Atelier (Gothenburg August 2018), as it remains a work in progress, to be improved, fine-tuned and examined from different perspectives, connecting participants in between Atelier editions and to eventually be shared with the broader festival community.
